Mara’s Story
Throughout my journey as an occupational therapist, I have often faced the challenge of proving myself. Working in non-traditional settings has driven me to develop and refine the most effective skills for treating and healing my patients.
Growing up, I was a three-sport athlete, with tennis and basketball being my favorites. In middle school, I experienced my first significant injury while playing basketball. This injury led to years of treatment and progressive degeneration, resulting in further injuries over time.
As I began my professional career, I was drawn to treating patients with chronic pain and multi-site injuries. This setting allowed me to connect deeply with my patients and maximize my effectiveness. My perspective shifted dramatically when I saw a family member being treated with Postural Restoration techniques. Inspired by its impact, I knew I had to learn everything about this form of treatment to enhance my practice. Thus, I embarked on a journey that led me to become one of only two Occupational Therapists in the country to achieve Postural Restoration Certification (PRC) in 2008.
As I embarked on my journey to earn my Postural Restoration Certification (PRC), my own symptoms began to worsen. I started waking up with severe eye pain, headaches, and neck pain, in addition to my longstanding low back and SI joint pain. I followed various recommendations from western medicine, which resulted in more medications. As my pain intensified, my depression and anxiety also worsened. Unable to tolerate pain medication, I was given additional drugs to manage my mental health symptoms. My difficulty sleeping further complicated matters, leading to even more medications to treat my symptoms.
The intensity of my symptoms left me desperate for relief. I realized that traditional western medicine primarily offered medication to manage my condition. Seeking alternative solutions, I collaborated closely with other PRC practitioners, who recommended exploring neuro-dentistry and neuro-optometry as part of my treatment. In addition to working with a mental health provider, I determined that a multidisciplinary approach was necessary to begin my recovery process.
With the combination of treatments, I began to make progress in my health journey. This increased knowledge allowed me to better assist my patients who were also ‘stuck’ in their own health journeys.
Between my daughter’s and son’s births, my low back symptoms resurfaced to the extent that emergency back surgery was the only option. Following a successful recovery from surgery and the birth of my son, I found myself struggling to maintain a balance between my work and family life.
Balancing the demand of a full-time management position, combined with adjusting to married life and caring for two children, intensified feelings of inadequacy. I found myself experiencing exhaustion, frequent illness, and a sense of feeling overwhelm as I struggled to manage my responsibilities and demands of daily life.
With all of the amplitude of pressures of daily life, one area of my training that has felt restricted was how to deal with the stress on the brain. While I was proficient in treating biomechanical stresses to alleviate an overactive sympathetic nervous system, I felt inadequately equipped to address the brain’s responses to stressors. That’s when I discovered Quantum Neuro Reset Therapy (QNRT), which seemed to offer the missing piece in calming the nervous system and ‘resetting’ brain function. During my QNRT certification coursework, I learned invaluable techniques for resetting the brain’s subconscious responses to injury or trauma, crucial for restoring optimal function. The result of QNRT is a better, healthier self. It’s an essential therapy for anyone who has experienced stressors throughout their life and struggles with chronic pain and dysfunction.
I can attest to the transformative power of both Postural Restoration and QNRT in my own life. These therapies have enabled me to become a better version of myself, and I believe they are indispensable additions to anyone’s health journey.
It would be my privilege to guide you in experiencing the transformative benefits of these therapies and supporting you on your path to becoming the best version of yourself!
